Oktoberfest in Berlin

Before the worl famous “Oktoberfest” starts, let’s have short look, whats the “Wiesn” is all about:

Short history

The „Oktoberfest“ tradition is more then 200 years old. Funny, it is not about to celebtrate the end of the summer or the beginning of autum, it was about the mariage of prince Ludwig and princess Therese in oktober 1810. They came together in Munich, the city in Bavaria, south germany. At the 17th of october, a horse race took place as a part of the mariage. Due to the mass of people, who joint the party they choose a field outside of the city, the Theresien Wiesen.

Since then it grews step by step every year and from 1819, the major of munich decided to celebrate this new event every year!

But there was no beer at the beginning! Instead they served wine and other beverage. Luckiliy the city of munich allowed to sell beer in 1880.

At the end of the 19th century it developed to the „Oktoberfest“ we know today.

    • A good waiter needs just 1.5 seconds to fill a „Maß“ beer. (It’s a glas with 1 liter beer)

    • A letter or postcard, send from the munich Oktoberfest get a special stamp

    • once, Albert Einstein worked at the Wiesn, he attached the the lightbulbs in one of the big tents

    • Augustiner Bräu is the only brewerey, which still uses wooden barrel

    • last year 7.4 billion liter where sold in 2014

    • the Oktoberfest starts at the end of september, because it is still warm 🙂

Oktoberfest in Berlin

Since the beginning, the Oktoberfest spreads all over the world. And, of course, it also happens in Berlin.

Although ot wasn’t celebrated in east germany (former GDR), after 1990 it was reestablished in Berlin. Today you can choose between a couple of locations and different types of beer.

We picked two for you:

The oldest one is the one, which takes place at Kurt-Schumacher-Damm. Since 1949 you can drink, dance and sing. It’s even the biggest and opens the doors for a 5€ entrance fee.

Check the details here:

The second one takes place at the beautiful location „Gendarmenmarkt“ in Berlin Mitte and adverts itself as the most music loving Oktoberfest in Berlin. Hostet by the original bavarian brewery „Löwenbräu“, so, keep this in mind, enjoy tons of live music, beer and late summer feelings! Entrance is free 🙂,or.r_cp.&bvm=bv.102537793,d.bGQ&biw=1920&bih=958&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAWoVChMIlM3w0fD4xwIVZGdyCh3mLQQZ

Oktoberfest at citystay Hostel Berlin

Since our bar manager is a huge fan of bavaria and we all love beer ;-), we have our anual beer special from mid september to the beginning of Oktober. Last year we had original bavarian Löwenbräu at tap but this year we changed it. I’m pretty excited about it, we get FlessaBräu Ale on tap, which is awsome! Althoug we have bottled craft beer from FlessaBräu, keg beer is new to our bar! So, join us at the citystay Hostel Bar and have a „Maß“ (1l) for 7€ (0,5l/3,50€) and a Brezel!

See you at the Oktoberfest in Berlin!
